Monitoring Awarding Bodies
Qualifications Wales undertakes a range of monitoring activities to ensure compliance with the conditions placed on awarding bodies.
How do we monitor?
Awarding bodies are responsible for the quality of their qualifications and delivery activities. Qualifications Wales, as the regulator, holds them to account.
At the level of the awarding body, we use a range of monitoring techniques to check that their activities are appropriate and ensure compliance with conditions of recognition. These may include responding to specific concerns, auditing against compliance, requiring and/or reviewing self-assessment activities or conducting thematic reviews.
Each year we will develop a programme of monitoring activities and will provide information about this to awarding bodies.
At the level of specific qualifications we also monitor approved qualifications, such as Welsh-specification GCSEs and A levels, to ensure they are awarded at the right standard, so that learners, parents, carers and teachers can have confidence in the grades. We work with other UK qualifications regulators in the monitoring of standards for other GCSEs and A levels.
