GCSE SUMMER 2017 RESULTS

Thursday 24 Aug 2017

The performance of 16-year-olds in six reformed GCSEs has either improved or remained stable.

The new GCSEs are in English Language, English Literature, Welsh Language, Welsh Literature, Mathematics-Numeracy and Mathematics.

Qualifications Wales has closely monitored WJEC’s delivery of these new qualifications and is confident that that standards have been maintained.

There was a big increase this summer in the number of 15-year-old pupils sitting their exams early, at the end of Year 10. Overall, the number of qualifications awarded to students who are 15-year-old and younger is up this year by 57%. In addition, more Year 11 students have opted to ‘bank’ grades from previous exam series, rather than returning to sit their exams again this summer. Taken together, these changes have had the effect of lowering this summer’s overall exam results.

Qualifications Wales has analysed the data to focus on the results for 16-year-olds who sat the exams this year and compared them with the performance of 16-year-olds in previous years.

“Given the big shift in entry patterns for these qualifications, with a large influx of Year 10 students sitting their exams early and some Year 11 students having sat their exams in November, it’s not possible to draw reliable conclusions from directly comparing summer 2017 and summer 2016 results.” said Director of Regulation Jo Richards.

“That’s why we have focussed on results for 16-year-olds to make more reliable comparisons.”
