Qualifications Wales: Data Submissions

From 2017/18 academic year onwards, the responsibility for publishing official statistics for general (GQ) and vocational qualifications (VQ) in Wales has transferred from Ofqual to Qualifications Wales.

In order to produce these official statistics, we collect a wide range of data about regulated qualifications from our recognised awarding bodies.

Reporting Schedule

Our Qualifications Reporting Schedule provides a timetable of all collections and their reporting dates.

Data Submissions

Data collection templates should be submitted to us using our data collection page on QiW. The QiW guidance documents provide further information about the collection process. The templates for providing the data are available for download from QiW. We produce official statistics relating to all qualifications regulated by us which are taken by learners in Wales. Therefore, data submitted to us should include all relevant qualifications offered.

General Qualifications

We collect a variety of data relating to regulated general qualifications via several different data templates. Guidance for each template can be found below, along with general guidance for submitting GQ data files on QiW:

Following our consultation on the design of data collection templates and the schedule for data collection in Wales, we made the decision to closely align our templates to Ofqual’s templates and match Ofqual’s collection schedule where possible. Since this decision was made, Ofqual has introduced some new templates and made changes to existing templates. Our Regulation Board has reviewed these changes and considered whether or not we will implement the same changes, and has made the following conclusions:

  • Merging of DR1 and DR2 into a single Review of Marking and Moderation collection – We will not be implementing this change at the moment and will retain the DR1 and DR2 templates for the 2019/20 academic year. We will review this decision ahead of the 2020/21 academic year.
  • Merging of E-assessment and Errata – We will not be implementing this change at the moment. We will retain the existing E-assessment template for the 2019/20 academic year. We do not currently collect data on Errata as part of our data collection schedule. We will review this decision ahead of the 2020/21 academic year.
  • Specification codes – We will not be collecting this data as part of our data collection schedule but will liaise with awarding bodies and Ofqual to collect this data through other means.
  • Complaints – We will not be implementing this collection at the moment, but may do so in the future.
  • Exams timetable – We will not be implementing this collection at the moment, but may do so in the future.

Vocational and Other Qualifications

We currently collect quarterly registration and certification data for regulated vocational and other qualifications in Wales. Pre-populated templates for this collection are available to download from QiW once each submission point opens. Guidance documents for this quarterly collection can be found below:
