Provisional Entries for the Summer 2022 exam series

Official statistics have been released showing the provisional number of exam entries in Wales for the summer 2022 exam series.

This is the first summer series in which learners are sitting nationally assessed GCSE, AS and A level exams since 2019.

The statistics show that entry figures for GCSEs are lower than those entered for summer 2021 – when learners were not nationally assessed. However, when compared to 2019, the number of GCSE entries in 2022 has increased. While Year 11 learners are the most likely to enter for GCSEs this year, there has been a decrease in entries from this year group compared to last year. There was a small increase in entries from Year 10 learners this year compared to last summer, but Year 12 or above entries have fallen.

At AS level, there are fewer entries than in summer 2021 and 2019. Entries from Year 12 learners are considerably higher than in 2019, however there has been a continued drop in entries from Year 13 learners at AS level.

For the second year running, the number of learners entered for A levels has increased, helped in part by the additional number of Year 13 entries seen this year. Entries from Year 14 and above have seen a drop compared to last summer.
