Malpractice in GCSE, AS and A level in Wales: summer 2022 exam series

An annual release that presents data on the number of malpractice penalties and offences in Wales for GCSE, AS and A level qualifications.

Key Points:

  • 235 penalties were issued to students in summer 2022, up 18.7% from 2019, the last summer when exams were sat.
  • In 2022, approximately one penalty was issued for every 4,200 entries.
  • Mobile phones continue to be the most common reason for a penalty to be issued. 44.3% of penalties in 2022 were issued due to students taking a mobile phone into the exam room.
  • 20 penalties were issued to centre staff for malpractice, and fewer than five penalties were issued to centres.
