Malpractice in GCSE, AS and A level in Wales: summer 2023 exam series

An annual release that presents data on the number of malpractice penalties and offences in Wales for GCSE, AS and A level qualifications.

Key Points: 

  • 310 penalties were issued to students in summer 2023, up 31.9% from 2022.  
  • In 2023, approximately one penalty was issued for every 3,500 entries. 
  • Mobile phones continue to be the most common reason for a penalty to be issued. 42.3% of penalties in 2023 were issued due to students taking a mobile phone into the exam room. 
  • 15 penalties were issued to centre staff for malpractice, and fewer than five penalties were issued to centres.
