Variation in GCSE, AS, and A level qualification results: Summer 2024

This release presents statistics on changes in overall GCSE, AS and A level outcomes seen by maintained schools.

Key Points:
In summer 2024, school results for GCSE, AS and A level decreased on average compared to 2023. This is consistent with changes in national results, which were awarded in line with pre-pandemic arrangements. However, some schools saw an increase in results compared to 2023 and there was substantial variation in changes across schools.

The relationship between changes seen in 2024 and changes seen in pre-pandemic years varies by grade. At some grades, the range of changes is very similar, while the picture is slightly different at other grades.

Compared to 2019, average school results for GCSE, AS and A level were broadly similar in 2024 at most grades. However, some school results went up, while other went down.

Across GCSE, AS and A level, schools that saw a larger decrease in 2023 tended to see either an increase or a smaller decrease in 2024, and vice versa. The strength of this pattern was moderate for all qualification types.
